Is strength training safe for kids? The international consensus says yes — with supervision
The 2014 international consensus — spanning pediatric exercise science, sports medicine and strength-and-conditioning bodies — endorses appropriately supervised resistance training for children and adolescents as safe and beneficial for health, injury resilience and performance.
Few gym myths have survived as long as the one about kids and weights — that resistance training stunts growth or damages growth plates. The 2014 international consensus, authored by the leading bodies in pediatric exercise science, sports medicine and strength and conditioning, exists to put the field's collective answer on record.
That answer: appropriately supervised resistance training is safe for children and adolescents, and beneficial. Properly programmed, it supports general health, builds the strength foundation that protects against sports injury, and improves performance. The documented injuries attributed to youth lifting overwhelmingly trace to unsupervised settings, poor technique and inappropriate loads — the absence of the conditions the consensus requires, not the presence of the training.
The endorsement is explicitly conditional, and the conditions are the point: qualified supervision, technique before load, and progression matched to the young athlete's stage of development rather than to a program written for adults.
It is worth being clear about what this document is: a position statement — structured expert agreement on the accumulated evidence — rather than a new trial. But it aligns with the randomised evidence that does exist, including the meta-analyses showing strength training is the single most protective form of exercise against sports injury. For parents of competitive kids, the practical question is not whether their child should strength train, but who is supervising it.
