Sleep and injury risk in young athletes: less than 8 hours, 1.7× the odds
In 112 adolescent athletes, sleeping less than 8 hours a night was associated with 1.7 times the odds of sports injury — a finding a 2019 meta-analysis of 7 studies broadly confirmed (odds ratio 1.58 for chronic poor sleep).
Training load, technique and strength dominate the conversation about keeping young athletes healthy. This study added a quieter variable: sleep. Surveying 112 adolescent athletes at a sports-medicine practice, the researchers compared sleep habits against injury history — and found that athletes sleeping less than eight hours a night carried 1.7 times the odds of having been injured. Each higher school-grade level added risk of its own (odds 1.4× per grade), consistent with older teens accumulating more exposure, more competition and, often, less sleep.
A single survey would be a thin foundation, which is why the 2019 systematic review by Gao and colleagues matters: pooling seven studies of youth sleep and injury, it confirmed the pattern — chronically poor sleep associated with 58% higher injury odds.
The honest frame: this is associative evidence. Milewski is a cross-sectional Level III survey with 70% completion; Gao grades the pooled evidence Level IV and finds acute (single-night) sleep effects inconclusive. Sleep-deprived athletes may also differ in schedule load, stress and training habits. Nobody has randomised teenagers to insufficient sleep to prove causation — nor should they.
But as levers go, this one is cheap, safe and plausible: reaction time, decision-making and tissue recovery all degrade with short sleep. In our return-to-play and athletic-development programs, sleep is treated as part of the training plan — tracked, discussed, and defended against the schedule creep of teenage sport.

For the parents of competitive teens we work with, this is a practical monitoring point: a young athlete consistently under eight hours is carrying a measurable, and fixable, risk factor. It costs nothing to address and belongs in every serious training plan.
