99 studies compared every recovery method — massage came out on top
The widest head-to-head comparison of recovery techniques — 99 studies covering active recovery, massage, compression, water immersion, contrast therapy and cryotherapy — found massage produced the largest reductions in both muscle soreness and perceived fatigue.
Athletes and active professionals face a crowded menu of recovery options: ice baths, compression garments, contrast showers, easy spins, massage. This systematic review did the useful thing — it pooled 99 studies and compared the whole menu against the same outcomes: delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), perceived fatigue, and blood markers of inflammation and muscle damage.
Most techniques did something. Active recovery, massage, compression, water immersion, contrast therapy and cryotherapy each reduced soreness to some degree. But when the techniques were ranked, one result stood out: massage produced the largest effects on both soreness and perceived fatigue — the two outcomes people actually feel. Inflammatory markers such as creatine kinase also dropped modestly.
The caveats belong in the picture. The included studies used varied protocols, doses and timing; some techniques were represented by only a handful of trials; and blood-marker changes do not automatically translate into performance. This is a map of the evidence, not a guarantee for any individual.
Still, when the widest comparison available puts hands-on massage at the top of the list — ahead of the gadgets and the ice — that is worth knowing before you spend money on recovery. It also matches what the technique-specific research (including our summaries of sports massage, massage guns and foam rolling) shows piece by piece: tools help a little; skilled hands help more.
